Exploring the Vowel Space of Multicultural Toronto English

While multiethnolects have been documented in major European metropolises over the last several decades, no such varieties reported North America. This is surprising given high degree of global immigration many American cities. We consider Toronto, Ontario, one most multicultural cities world, and explore features a Multicultural Toronto English. Data comes from young people an ethnolinguistically diverse region Greater Area. investigate five vocalic phenomena: goose fronting, Canadian Vowel Shift, raising, ban/bag tensing, goat monophthongization. Our results indicate great deal interspeaker variability with some suggestion that young, immigrant men are least likely to produce normative English patterns. However, lack cohesion covariation between phenomena consistent multiethnolect as understood variable repertoire. argue represents linguistic alterity means everyday resistance for Torontonians.
